Satoru Gojo is from Jujutsu Kaisen, MAPPA's anime adaptation of Gege Akutami's manga, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2018 to 2024. If you've seen the white hair and blindfold in memes, cosplay or a friend's phone background and wondered where he's from, that's the answer. Here's what else you need to know before you go and watch him.
Who is Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Gojo is a teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High, a school that trains sorcerers to fight curses. He's also the strongest sorcerer alive, and he knows it. He's the one who saves Yuji Itadori from an immediate death sentence after Yuji eats one of Sukuna's fingers, and he becomes the homeroom teacher of Yuji, Megumi and Nobara. For the long version, read our Satoru Gojo profile.
He isn't the main character. That's Yuji. But Gojo is so central to how the story works that a lot of people assume he is. The plot keeps having to find ways to get him out of the room, because when he's there, fights tend to be over very quickly.
Where does Gojo first appear?
He turns up at the very end of Season 1, Episode 1, arriving to deal with the Sukuna situation, and is a regular from Episode 2 onwards. In the manga, he shows up in Chapter 1 as well. His first full showcase is Episode 7, where he takes Yuji along to watch him fight the Special Grade curse Jogo and uses his Domain Expansion, Unlimited Void.
Which Gojo episodes should you watch first?
Season 1, Episode 7. Gojo vs Jogo. The cleanest explanation of Infinity in the whole anime, and the first time you see Unlimited Void.
The Goodwill Event. When curses crash the exchange event, Gojo breaks through a barrier and fires Hollow Purple at Hanami. It's brief and very loud.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Gojo is Yuta's teacher here, and his final scene with Geto is one of his most important moments.
Season 2, Episodes 25 to 29. Hidden Inventory shows him as a teenager. If you only know adult Gojo, this arc will change how you see him.
What are Gojo's powers?
Gojo was born with two rare gifts at once: the Six Eyes, which let him see cursed energy in extreme detail, and the Limitless, his clan's inherited technique. Limitless lets him control space at a tiny scale. The everyday version is Infinity, an invisible barrier that stops anything from reaching him. On top of that he has Blue, which pulls, Red, which pushes, and Hollow Purple, which combines the two and erases whatever it hits. His domain, Unlimited Void, floods the target with infinite information until they can't move.
The blindfold isn't for style, or not only. The Six Eyes take in so much that he covers them in daily life. When he takes it off, things are about to get serious. Our strongest JJK characters ranking explains where he sits against the rest of the cast.
Is Gojo actually a good teacher?
Fans argue about this constantly. He's late, he's flippant, and his idea of a lesson is often throwing a student at something terrifying to see what happens. But he also goes to bat for his students against the higher-ups every single time, and his whole reason for teaching is to raise a generation strong enough that he isn't alone at the top. Judge him on results: Yuta, Yuji and Megumi all grow enormously under him.
Who voices Gojo?
Yuichi Nakamura voices him in Japanese and Kaiji Tang in the English dub. Both have played him since Season 1. More casting details are on our JJK voice actors page.
Why is Gojo so popular?
Most "strongest" characters in shonen are serious. Gojo is a goofball who happens to be untouchable, and the contrast works. He's playful with his students, rude to the higher-ups, and capable of ending most fights in seconds. Then Season 2 gives him a real tragedy, and fans who came for the jokes stayed for his friendship with Geto. The design helps too. Our JJK characters by hair color page has him filed under white, along with a few others.
What happens to Gojo? (spoilers)
During the Shibuya Incident in Season 2, Kenjaku seals Gojo in the Prison Realm. He stays sealed through the Culling Game and is freed in Chapter 221 of the manga. For anything past that, read our profile with spoilers switched on.
