Jujutsu Kaisen (often shortened to JJK) is a dark action series about curses, monsters born from negative human emotions, and the jujutsu sorcerers who fight them. It started as a manga by Gege Akutami in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018, and studio MAPPA's anime has been running since 2020. If someone's told you to watch it and you want to know what you're signing up for, here's the spoiler-light version.
What is JJK about, in one paragraph?
Yuji Itadori is a high schooler with ridiculous physical strength and no interest in the supernatural. When his school's Occult Club opens a seal on a rotting finger, curses swarm the building. To save his friends, Yuji swallows the finger. It belongs to Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, who now lives inside him. Jujutsu society wants Yuji dead, but Satoru Gojo convinces them to delay the execution until Yuji has eaten all twenty of Sukuna's fingers, so that Sukuna can be destroyed in one go. Yuji enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High, and the story follows him and his classmates as everything goes wrong.

Who are the main characters?
Yuji Itadori is the lead: kind, stubborn and promised to his grandfather that he'd help people. Megumi Fushiguro is a quiet first-year who summons shikigami from shadows. Nobara Kugisaki came to Tokyo from the countryside and fights with a hammer and nails. Satoru Gojo is their teacher and the strongest sorcerer around. And Sukuna is the curse inside Yuji, who would very much like to get out. Our main characters page goes further.

How does jujutsu work?
You don't need to memorise the rules to enjoy it, but a few terms come up constantly.
- Cursed energy: energy that comes from negative emotion. Everyone has some; sorcerers can control theirs.
- Cursed technique: a sorcerer's personal ability, usually inherited or born with them.
- Domain Expansion: a sorcerer's most advanced move, building a space where their technique is guaranteed to hit.
- Grades: sorcerers and curses are ranked from Grade 4 up to Special Grade.
- Binding vows: deals that give you more power in exchange for a restriction.
What are the villains like?
Early on, the main threat is a group of intelligent cursed spirits, including Mahito, Jogo and Hanami, working with a mysterious man who looks like Suguru Geto. Mahito in particular is the series' first real nightmare: a curse who reshapes human souls for fun. Later arcs bring in sorcerers and curse users with their own plans. See our JJK villains guide or the Mahito profile.

What's the tone like?
Funny, then horrifying, often in the same episode. JJK has the classic shonen ingredients (training, tournaments, a school setting, big fights) but it's much more willing to hurt its characters than most. People die, and not always heroically. If you liked the darker parts of other Jump series, you'll probably like this. If you want something lighter, be warned that the Shibuya arc in Season 2 gets very grim.
What does "Jujutsu Kaisen" mean?
Jujutsu means sorcery or curse magic, and kaisen is usually read as a battle or fight, so the title roughly means "sorcery battle". In the series, "jujutsu" is the umbrella term for the whole system of curses, cursed energy and the people who use it.
How long is Jujutsu Kaisen?
The anime currently has 59 TV episodes over three seasons plus the movie, which adds up to roughly a day of viewing. The manga is finished at 271 chapters in 30 volumes, so there's a lot of story the anime hasn't reached yet. Season 4 is in production, and even that won't cover the final arc.
Who will like Jujutsu Kaisen?
If you enjoy creative power systems and fights where the smarter fighter wins, JJK is a strong pick. It also suits people who like ensemble casts, because side characters get real arcs and real stakes. It's a weaker fit if you want a long, comfortable series where everyone survives. JJK moves fast and doesn't protect its favourites.
Is it a good place to start with anime?
Yes, with the tone caveat above. The first few episodes explain the world clearly, the fights are some of the best-animated in modern TV anime, and Season 1 is 24 episodes. That's a manageable commitment.
