Who is Gojo in JJK?

Satoru Gojo is the first-year teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High, the strongest sorcerer of the modern era and, for a lot of people, the reason they picked up Jujutsu Kaisen in the first place. He's the character fans mean when they search "gojo jjk": white hair, a blindfold, a grin, and a habit of treating life-or-death situations like an inconvenience.

What makes him interesting is that the story knows he's a problem. If Gojo is free and paying attention, almost nothing can threaten the heroes. So Jujutsu Kaisen keeps finding ways to take him off the board, and every time it does, the stakes jump.

Appearance and personality

Gojo is very tall (over 190 cm in most references) with spiky white hair and bright blue eyes, which he usually hides behind a black blindfold or small round sunglasses. The blindfold isn't a style choice. His Six Eyes take in so much information that covering them cuts down the strain.

His personality is the fun part. He's childish, teasing and openly rude to the jujutsu higher-ups, whom he considers rotten. He brings souvenirs, cracks jokes in the middle of fights and calls himself the strongest without a hint of irony. Underneath it, though, he's lonely in a way the series takes seriously. Being that far above everyone else means almost nobody can stand next to him. The one person who did, Suguru Geto, is the wound that runs through his whole story.

Background

Gojo was born into the Gojo clan, one of the three great jujutsu families, with both the Limitless technique and the Six Eyes. That pairing hadn't appeared in the clan for centuries, and his birth is said to have shifted the balance of the entire jujutsu world.

Season 2's Hidden Inventory arc shows him as a second-year student in 2006 alongside Geto and Shoko Ieiri. He and Geto are best friends and the strongest pair of students anyone has seen. That arc is where Toji Fushiguro nearly kills him, and where he awakens fully. Years later, Gojo becomes a teacher because he wants to raise a generation strong enough to tear down the old system rather than simply beating it himself.

Cursed technique: Limitless and the Six Eyes

Limitless lets Gojo bring the idea of infinity into the real world. The everyday version is Infinity, an invisible barrier where anything approaching him slows down forever without touching him. That's why attacks seem to stop in the air around him.

From there it branches out:

  • Blue pulls things towards a point, like a small black hole.
  • Red, the reversed version, blasts things away with huge force. It needs Reverse Cursed Technique, which Gojo only masters after his fight with Toji.
  • Hollow Purple combines Blue and Red into a mass that erases whatever it passes through. He first uses it at the end of Hidden Inventory.

The Six Eyes are what make all this practical. They let him see cursed energy in extreme detail and use Limitless with almost no waste, so he can keep Infinity up for long periods. Combined with Reverse Cursed Technique, he can also heal himself and keep his brain from burning out.

Domain Expansion: Unlimited Void

Gojo's domain, Unlimited Void, floods anyone caught inside with infinite information. They can see and feel everything and therefore can't act at all. In Shibuya he opens it for just 0.2 seconds to freeze a crowd of civilians and transfigured humans without frying the civilians' brains. It's one of the clearest demonstrations of how far ahead of everyone he is.

Gojo's fights, arc by arc

Season 1: he toys with Jogo (episode 7) and shows Yuji what a domain is by trapping them both inside Unlimited Void. When the Goodwill Event is invaded, he ends the attack by firing Hollow Purple at Hanami.

Hidden Inventory: Toji ambushes him and seemingly kills him. Gojo comes back, having awakened Reverse Cursed Technique, and kills Toji with Hollow Purple.

Shibuya: Gojo fights Jogo, Hanami and Choso at once on a crowded subway platform, uses his 0.2-second domain, and wins. Then Kenjaku shows him Geto's face, and that moment of hesitation is enough. He is sealed in the Prison Realm in Chapter 91.

Return: Gojo is finally freed in Chapter 221 and sets a date with Sukuna: December 24. Their fight runs for over a dozen chapters and is the most-discussed duel in the manga. It ends in Chapter 236.

Why Gojo is so popular

Part of it is design: the blindfold, the eyes, the height. Part of it is that he's fun. Most "strongest character" archetypes are stoic. Gojo is a goofball who happens to be untouchable, and that contrast is addictive. The rest is the Geto story. Season 2 gave him a tragedy, and fans who came for the jokes stayed for the loneliness underneath them.

Relationships

Suguru Geto is his best friend and his greatest regret. Megumi is the closest thing he has to a son. Gojo stepped in when Megumi was a child to stop him being handed to the Zenin clan, after Toji's dying words. Yuji is the student he defends from the higher-ups' death sentence. Yuta is the student he trusts most with the future. He teases Utahime Iori constantly, and Shoko is the classmate who knows him best.

His given name, 悟, means enlightenment, a neat fit for someone who sees everything. He has a well-known sweet tooth in the anime. And his line from Hidden Inventory, roughly "throughout heaven and earth, I alone am the honoured one", became one of the most quoted moments of Season 2.

Is Gojo dead?

⚠ Major spoiler. Enable "Spoilers" up top.

Yes. Sukuna kills Gojo in Chapter 236, cutting him in half after Sukuna learns to aim his slashes at the world itself. Gojo's body appears again later, but not with Gojo inside it: in Chapter 261, Yuta reveals he has moved his own brain into Gojo's body with Gojo's prior consent.
