How this JJK death tracker works
Jujutsu Kaisen is famous for killing characters, and the question "who dies in JJK?" gets asked about almost every named character. This page answers it for the completed manga, which ended with Chapter 271 in September 2024. Everything that could spoil you is blurred or boxed until you switch on "Spoilers" in the header. Leave it off and you can scroll the page safely.
We only list a chapter number when we've checked it. If we aren't sure exactly when something happens, we say so or leave it out.
Who dies in the JJK anime (Seasons 1–3)
⚠ Anime spoilers up to Season 3. Switch on "Spoilers" in the header to read.
Season 1: Junpei Yoshino dies after Mahito transfigures him, near the end of the Mahito arc. Yuji's grandfather Wasuke dies of illness in the first episode. The Death Paintings Eso and Kechizu are killed by Yuji and Nobara in the finale arc.
Season 2: Riko Amanai is shot by Toji in Hidden Inventory, and Toji is killed by Gojo shortly after. Yu Haibara dies on a mission, and we see the aftermath. In Shibuya, Jogo is killed by Sukuna, Hanami falls to Gojo, and Dagon is killed by Toji. Kento Nanami dies at Mahito's hands in episode 18 (Chapter 120 in the manga). Mahito is beaten by Yuji and absorbed by Kenjaku, which happens in Chapter 133. Mechamaru is killed by Mahito before Shibuya even starts. Naobito Zenin is badly burned and dies afterwards.
Season 3: Mai Zenin dies after creating the Split Soul Katana for Maki (Chapter 149), during Maki's massacre of the Zenin clan. Naoya Zenin is stabbed by Maki's mother. Most of the senior Zenin are killed by Maki in the same arc.
Major deaths in the JJK manga after the anime
⚠ Major manga spoilers. Switch on "Spoilers" in the header to read.
Yuki Tsukumo dies fighting Kenjaku in Chapter 208, turning herself into a black hole as a last attack. Satoru Gojo is killed by Sukuna in Chapter 236, a death so abrupt it became a meme within hours. Hajime Kashimo challenges Sukuna immediately afterwards and dies in Chapter 238. Kenjaku is killed by Yuta in Chapter 243. Choso dies in Chapter 259, shielding Yuji from Sukuna's flames, and Yuji finally calls him his older brother. Sukuna is beaten by Yuji and separated from Megumi's body, and fades away in Chapter 268.
Some characters are injured badly enough that readers assumed they were dead. Nobara disappears after Shibuya and isn't seen again until Chapter 267. Inumaki loses a hand in Shibuya and survives.
Who survives Jujutsu Kaisen?
⚠ Ending spoilers. Switch on "Spoilers" in the header to read.
All three first-years make it: Yuji, Megumi and Nobara are alive at the end of the manga. So are Maki, Yuta, Inumaki, Panda, Hakari, Todo, Shoko and Utahime. Megumi survives Sukuna's possession, although his sister Tsumiki does not survive the arc. Yuta's survival involves one of the strangest twists of the final arc, which we'll leave you to read for yourself.
Why so many JJK characters die
Death in this manga tends to stay final. There's no healing everyone back at the end of an arc. A character can be built up for dozens of chapters, as Nanami was, and still go out in a few pages. That's a big part of why the fandom argues so much about who's alive. It feels like nobody is safe, because for most of the run nobody is.
It also explains the jokes. "Stand proud", "nah, I'd win" and Gojo being "cut in half" all became memes because the deaths were so sudden that laughing was easier than processing them.
Use the sortable table below to check any character's status. It stays blurred until you switch spoilers on.
The JJK deaths fans took hardest
⚠ Spoilers. Switch on "Spoilers" in the header to read.
Nanami comes first for most people. His final moments in Shibuya, burned and exhausted, are written with real care, and the fact that he gets one last quiet thought before Mahito touches him makes it worse.
Gojo is the most shocking, not because nobody expected him to die but because of how it happens. A huge build-up, then the result shown almost in passing. Some readers loved the boldness. Plenty didn't.
Junpei is the first death that tells you what kind of story this is. Mai's sacrifice is one of the quietest and saddest scenes in the manga. And Choso's death is one of the few that ends on peace rather than horror, with Yuji finally giving him what he wanted.
Common myths about who dies in JJK
⚠ Spoilers. Switch on "Spoilers" in the header to read.
"Megumi dies." He doesn't. Sukuna takes over his body and it gets very close, but Megumi is alive at the end.
"Nobara died in Shibuya." For years this was the default assumption, because the manga left it open. She's alive and returns in Chapter 267.
"Yuta died." This one is complicated by a late twist, but Yuta is alive when the story ends.
"Todo died." He loses a hand in Shibuya and drops out of the story for a long time, but he comes back for the final arc in Chapter 259.
If you're only watching the anime
Season 3 ended in March 2026 partway through the Culling Game. The biggest deaths of the manga, including Gojo's, are still ahead for anime-only viewers, and Season 4 is expected to start covering them. If you'd rather be surprised, keep spoilers off and stick to the Season 1 and Season 2 boxes above.
One note on how we use the word "dies" here. A few JJK characters are killed and then reappear in other forms, through reincarnation, Granny Ogami's séance or Kenjaku's body-swapping. We count the original death and mention the return in the character's own entry.
Statuses in the table reflect the end of the main manga.
