Short answer

Who is the main character of JJK?

Yuji Itadori. He is the protagonist from Chapter 1, published in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018, to the final chapter in September 2024, and the anime opens on him too: Season 1 episode 1 is simply titled "Ryomen Sukuna", but it's Yuji's day at school, his grandfather's hospital bed and his decision to eat the finger that we follow.

The reason people still ask is that Jujutsu Kaisen keeps handing the spotlight to other characters for long stretches. Gojo carries most of Hidden Inventory. Yuta is the lead of Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Megumi drives the plot of the Culling Game more than Yuji does for a while. None of that changes who the story is about. Every arc ends by asking what Yuji is going to do with what just happened to him.

The core cast

The main characters of Jujutsu Kaisen and what each one is for

A good way to understand the main characters of Jujutsu Kaisen is to look at the job each one does in the story, not just their power level.

Yuji Itadori: the heart

Yuji gives the series its moral question. He wants to help people die "proper deaths", a promise he makes to his grandfather Wasuke, and the plot spends six years testing whether that is even possible in a world full of curses. He has no inherited technique for most of the story. What he has is absurd physical strength, a talent for Black Flash (his first one lands against Hanami in Season 1 episode 19, titled "Black Flash") and a body that can hold Sukuna without losing himself.

Megumi Fushiguro: the mirror

Megumi is the cooler, more cynical classmate, and he says plainly that he saves people selectively. That makes him the perfect counterweight to Yuji. His Ten Shadows technique is one of the strongest in the series, and Sukuna noticing that potential early on is a thread that pays off in the worst way possible later.

Nobara Kugisaki: the attitude

Nobara arrives in Season 1 episode 3 and immediately refuses to be anyone's support character. She came to Tokyo because she wanted to, uses a hammer and nails with her Straw Doll technique, and her Resonance lets her hurt a target through a piece of their body. Her absence for a long stretch of the manga is one of the things readers talk about most. She returns in Chapter 267 for the fight with Sukuna.

Satoru Gojo: the ceiling

Gojo is the teacher, the strongest sorcerer alive and the main reason the higher-ups can't simply execute Yuji. Structurally he is the character the story has to get rid of before the stakes can feel real, and Gege Akutami does exactly that in Shibuya. Kenjaku seals him in the Prison Realm in Chapter 91.

Ryomen Sukuna: the threat in the room

Sukuna lives inside the protagonist, which is a smart piece of design. The main villain is never far away, and every time Yuji gets hurt badly enough, the reader has to wonder what happens if Sukuna takes over. The answer arrives in Season 2's Shibuya arc, and it's horrifying.

Arguments fans have

Is Megumi the real main character?

It's a common take, and there's something to it. Megumi's family history (the Zenin clan, his father Toji, his sister Tsumiki) generates more plot than Yuji's for a large part of the manga, and the final arc revolves around him in a very direct way. You could argue he is the deuteragonist.

We don't think that makes him the lead. Megumi is the person the plot happens to. Yuji is the person whose choices the story keeps measuring itself against. When the series ends, its last chapters are about Yuji's idea of what a sorcerer should be, not Megumi's.

The same logic applies to Gojo. He's the most popular character by a wide margin in most fan circles, but popularity and protagonist are different things. Gojo's whole arc is about passing the job to the next generation, which only works if he isn't the main character.

Where to start

Main character order for new fans

If you're new and want to meet the Jujutsu Kaisen main characters in the order the story intended, watch Season 1, then the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, then Season 2 and Season 3. The movie is a prequel, but it lands harder once you already know Maki, Inumaki, Panda and Gojo. Watching it after Season 1 also means Yuta's return later feels like an event rather than an introduction.

Manga readers get a similar choice. Volume 0 can be read first, and plenty of people do, but the main series was written to stand on its own from Chapter 1.

Quick reference

Main character of JJK vs main character of JJK 0

Two different leads, two different tones. Yuji's story is about a kid who didn't choose jujutsu and keeps choosing to stay anyway. Yuta's is about a kid who wanted to disappear and learns he's allowed to exist. Both are worth meeting, and the series is smart enough to put them in the same fight eventually.

Deeper notes

How the main characters of JJK change over the story

The JJK main characters don't stay still, and that's half the fun of following them. A quick sense of how each one shifts, with the big turns kept behind the spoiler switch:

Yuji starts as a kid who fights with his fists and a borrowed curse in his chest. Shibuya breaks him. He decides he's "a cog", someone whose job is simply to kill curses until he can't. By the end of the manga he has learned Blood Manipulation and can use Sukuna's own slashing technique, and the final fight is as much an argument with Sukuna as a battle.

Megumi spends the early story holding back, partly out of caution and partly because he doesn't value his own life much. Gojo calls him out on that directly. His arc turns into the bleakest in the series once Sukuna takes his body in Chapter 212.

Nobara grows less in the plot than the others simply because she's missing for so long, but her early scenes give her the clearest sense of self in the trio. She never wants to be anything other than herself.

Gojo moves from untouchable to absent. His sealing changes the whole shape of the story, and the question of when he'll come back hangs over the Culling Game.

Relationships

The main character relationships that drive JJK

If you want to understand the Jujutsu Kaisen main characters quickly, look at the pairs. Yuji and Sukuna are host and parasite, and they despise each other. Yuji and Megumi are friends with opposite ideas about who deserves saving. Gojo and Geto are the series' great broken friendship, and their story sits behind JJK 0 and Season 2. Yuji and Choso become brothers by blood in a way that takes a while to explain. Maki and Mai are twins pulled apart by the Zenin clan. Nearly every major emotional beat in the story happens to one of these pairs.
