JJK Season 2 at a glance
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 ran from July 6 to December 28, 2023, 23 episodes across two back-to-back cours. If you're after the JJK characters in Season 2 specifically, this page splits them by arc. Shota Goshozono took over as series director from Sunghoo Park, with MAPPA still animating. The first five episodes adapt Hidden Inventory / Premature Death, a flashback to 2006, and the remaining 18 adapt the Shibuya Incident, which takes place on Halloween night 2018.
That split matters for this page. The JJK characters of Season 2 belong to two different time periods, so we've grouped them that way below.
Hidden Inventory characters (episodes 1–5)
Hidden Inventory is a prequel inside a sequel. Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto are second-year students and best friends, cocky and very good at their jobs. They're assigned to protect Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel, a schoolgirl chosen to merge with Tengen, alongside her caretaker Misato Kuroi.
The person sent to stop them is Toji Fushiguro, a sorcerer killer with zero cursed energy and a Heavenly Restriction that makes his body absurdly strong. What follows is one of the most famous fights in the anime. It's also where Gojo awakens fully, and where Geto starts down the road that ends in Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Other faces from this arc: classmate Shoko Ieiri, cheerful junior Yu Haibara, a teenage Kento Nanami before he quits, Mei Mei and her brother Ui Ui, and Yuki Tsukumo, who shows up to ask Geto what type of woman he likes (yes, the same line Todo uses) and plants the idea that a world without curses is possible.
Shibuya Incident characters (episodes 6–23)
The Shibuya arc is a war. Kenjaku, wearing Geto's body, teams up with the disaster curses to trap Gojo, and almost every sorcerer in Tokyo ends up in the streets. The new JJK season 2 characters who matter most:
- Choso becomes a real threat and then something much more complicated. His fight with Yuji in the Shibuya underground is a turning point for both of them.
- The Zenin clan shows up in force, led by Naobito Zenin, the clan head and one of the fastest sorcerers alive thanks to his Projection Sorcery.
- Atsuya Kusakabe, a Grade 1 teacher with no inherited technique, gets some surprisingly good moments with Panda.
- Takuma Ino, Nanami's junior, fights alongside the adults and gets wrecked by an enemy curse user.
- Toji comes back in a way that nobody saw coming, thanks to Granny Ogami's séance technique.
- Mahoraga, the strongest shikigami of the Ten Shadows, is summoned by Megumi as a last resort. Sukuna has to deal with it.
Curse users Jiro Awasaka, Juzo Kumiya and Haruta Shigemo also appear on the enemy side, along with cursed spirits like the Smallpox Deity.
Season 2 character moments people still talk about
⚠ Season 2 spoilers. Switch on "Spoilers" in the header to read.
Gojo is sealed inside the Prison Realm, which in the manga happens in Chapter 91. Sukuna takes control of Yuji, kills Jogo, and destroys a huge part of Shibuya fighting Mahoraga. Nanami dies at Mahito's hands in episode 18, and Nobara is caught by Mahito's technique soon after. Yuji, broken, keeps fighting, and with Todo's help finally beats Mahito, only for Kenjaku to absorb him. The arc closes with Kenjaku announcing the Culling Game. It's the darkest stretch of the anime and the one most fans point to as the series at its best.
The best Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 characters
Toji wins on pure impact. Five episodes in 2006 and a short return in Shibuya, and he's now one of the most cosplayed characters in the fandom.
Geto gets the most character development of anyone in the season. Watching Hidden Inventory makes JJK 0 a better movie in hindsight.
Choso is the season's best surprise. He starts the arc as someone you want Yuji to beat and ends it as someone you want Yuji to keep.
Music and production in Season 2
Hidden Inventory uses "Ao no Sumika" by Tatsuya Kitani as its opening, and the Shibuya Incident uses "SPECIALZ" by King Gnu. The two songs set the mood almost perfectly: the first sounds like a summer memory, the second sounds like a city falling apart.
Season 2 also had a famously difficult production. The Shibuya arc aired week to week with very little buffer, and animators' working conditions became a public talking point during the broadcast. The finished episodes still include some of the most ambitious fight animation MAPPA has done, especially Sukuna against Mahoraga.
Do you need Season 1 before Season 2?
Yes, really. Hidden Inventory can technically be watched as a standalone prequel, and some people do start there. But Shibuya assumes you know the whole Season 1 cast, plus Yuta's story from JJK 0, and it pays off a lot of Season 1 setups. Watch Season 1, then JJK 0, then Season 2. The JJK characters of Season 2 hit much harder when you already care about them.
Season 2 JJK characters at a glance
Hidden Inventory (2006): teenage Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto and Shoko Ieiri, Riko Amanai, Misato Kuroi, Toji Fushiguro, Yu Haibara, teenage Kento Nanami, Mei Mei, Ui Ui, Yuki Tsukumo, Tengen.
Shibuya Incident (2018): Choso, Naobito Zenin, Atsuya Kusakabe, Takuma Ino, Granny Ogami, Jiro Awasaka, Juzo Kumiya, Haruta Shigemo, Mahoraga and the Smallpox Deity, with almost the entire Season 1 cast returning.
Season 1 favourites like Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, Nanami, Todo and Mahito all play huge roles in Shibuya even though they don't count as new Season 2 characters. They appear in the Season 1 characters gallery instead.
If you only have time to rewatch one stretch before Season 3, make it the last six episodes of Shibuya. The Culling Game picks up directly from them.
Gojo, Geto and Toji: the Hidden Inventory triangle
Hidden Inventory is only five episodes long, but it changes how you see three major characters.
Gojo starts the arc as a cocky teenager who is already the strongest but still carries Infinity around carefully. Toji beats him. The near-death experience is what pushes Gojo to master Reverse Cursed Technique, and he comes back noticeably different, the version of himself everyone in the present day knows.
Geto starts the arc as the more thoughtful of the two, the one who believes sorcerers exist to protect ordinary people. The mission's ending, a cult applauding a dead girl, and then a run of grim missions, including the loss of Yu Haibara, chip away at that. The arc ends with him turning on non-sorcerers completely.
Toji is the catalyst for both. He doesn't care about ideology. He takes the job, does it well, and, just before he dies, mentions to Gojo that his son is about to be sold to the Zenin clan. That son is Megumi, and it explains why Gojo later takes Megumi under his wing.
Which JJK season 2 characters carry Shibuya
Shibuya is split across many groups, so it helps to know who leads each thread. Yuji moves through the whole incident and has the central emotional arc. Nanami, Maki and the Zenin group fight on another front. Megumi deals with curse users and then makes the desperate call to summon Mahoraga. Nobara heads off with Nitta and ends up facing Mahito. Mei Mei and Ui Ui take on curse users underground, and Choso blocks Yuji's way until something changes his mind.
