What is Modulo?

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo in one paragraph

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo (written 呪術廻戦≡ in Japanese) is a short sequel manga written by Gege Akutami and drawn by Yuji Iwasaki. It ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from September 8, 2025 to March 9, 2026, 25 chapters collected in three volumes. The story jumps to 2086, 68 years after the Culling Game, when a ship carrying an alien race called the Simurians arrives above Earth. The Simurians can use something very much like jujutsu, so Japan, the cursed energy capital of the world, ends up handling the diplomacy.

The leads

Main JJK Modulo characters

Yuka Okkotsu and Tsurugi Okkotsu

The two protagonists are siblings, and they're the grandchildren of Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin. That single fact told readers a lot about what happened after the main series, which is why it caused such a stir when Modulo launched. Both are teenage sorcerers assigned to escort a Simurian envoy through school and missions.

Maru

Maru's full name is Marulu Val Vol Yelvori. He's the friendly, three-eyed Simurian sent to work with the Okkotsu siblings, partly as a diplomat and partly as a test of whether humans and Simurians can actually live together. He is curious about everything on Earth, and a lot of the manga's lighter moments come from him.

Cross

Cross is Maru's twin brother and the counterpoint to him. Where Maru wants coexistence, Cross works to push the two sides towards conflict.

Returning faces

Do any original JJK characters appear in Modulo?

⚠ Spoilers for the end of Jujutsu Kaisen and for Modulo. Switch on "Spoilers" in the header to read.

Yes, a few. Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki both appear late in Modulo, and the final chapter gives them a scene together. Yuji talks about Choso as his older brother, half human and half curse, which ties neatly into the Simurian question of who gets to count as a person. Yuta and Maki appear only through references and flashbacks, since they've died before the story begins.

Our take

Is Modulo worth reading?

If you finished the main manga and wanted more of the world, yes. It's short enough to read in an evening, and the setting does something genuinely new with jujutsu instead of rerunning the Culling Game. The art from Yuji Iwasaki is clean and very readable in fights.

Fair warning, though: it's a small story. If you go in expecting a full sequel series with Shibuya-level stakes, you'll be disappointed. Think of it as an epilogue that happens to have a plot, and you'll get more out of it. Modulo characters are also a lot less fleshed out than the original cast, simply because there are only 25 chapters to work with.

There is no Modulo anime at our last update. An animated promotional video was released alongside the final volume in May 2026, but that is not the same as a series announcement.

Where to read

How to read Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo

In English, Modulo is published by Viz Media through its Shonen Jump service and by Shueisha on MANGA Plus. The three print volumes came out in Japan on January 5, March 4 and May 1, 2026.

The setting

The world of Modulo, 68 years later

Modulo's 2086 Japan is still dealing with what happened in the main series. The Simurians' arrival is compared to Sukuna's attack 68 years earlier, which tells you how deep a mark the final arc of Jujutsu Kaisen left on its world. Sorcerers still exist and still go to school, but the generation that fought Sukuna is gone, and their descendants are working out what jujutsu is for when the enemy isn't a curse.

The Simurians themselves arrive on a mothership called the Naunax. They describe themselves as refugees looking for a new home. Whether humans and Simurians can actually live side by side is the question every Modulo character is built around, and Maru sits right in the middle of it.

Plot hook

What the Okkotsu siblings investigate

The early chapters send Yuka and Tsurugi after a wave of kidnappings that start just as the Simurians arrive. It turns out that rogue curse users are abducting children and selling them as living cursed energy "batteries". Investigating that leads the siblings to discover Maru's real identity, and pushes all three of them to look for a way for the two species to coexist while Cross works against them.

It's a tight, fast setup, which suits a manga that only had 25 chapters to work with.

Why fans care

Why Modulo characters matter to JJK fans

For a lot of readers, Modulo's biggest contribution is answering "what happened next?" without a full sequel. Knowing that Yuta and Maki had a family together is the kind of detail the main series' ending didn't spell out. Seeing what became of Yuji and Nobara does the same. Even if you don't love the new cast, those glimpses make Modulo worth reading.

Quick facts

JJK Modulo at a glance

The ≡ symbol in the Japanese title is the congruence sign used in modular arithmetic, which fits the English reading "Modulo".

If you want to see where the Okkotsu siblings' grandparents came from, start with our Jujutsu Kaisen 0 characters guide. Yuta and Maki first meet there as classmates, and it's a nice extra layer to have in your head going into Modulo.

We will expand the Modulo character entries as more official material, such as interviews or guidebooks, becomes available in English.

Comparison

Modulo vs the original Jujutsu Kaisen

The original series is about curses, emotions turned into monsters. Modulo is about a different kind of outsider: an alien people who can use jujutsu but aren't human. That switch changes the questions. Instead of "how do we kill this?", it's "can we live with this?", and the Okkotsu siblings and Maru are built to argue different sides of that.

The tone is lighter, too. Maru's curiosity about Earth gives the story room for jokes that the late main series rarely had space for. The violence is still there, but the focus is on diplomacy and trust rather than survival.

And where the main series had a huge cast, Modulo keeps its core to a few characters. That means less variety, but it also means the leads get more page time each, proportionally, than most of the original cast ever did.

Reading order

When to read Modulo

Read it after finishing the main manga. Modulo assumes you know how Jujutsu Kaisen ends, and it opens with references that only make sense if you do. Anime-only fans should wait. Too much of what makes the Modulo characters interesting depends on knowing what happened to their families.

If you liked the Okkotsu family angle, the gallery below links each Modulo character to what we know about them so far.
