Who is Kento Nanami?
Kento Nanami is a Grade 1 sorcerer, a former office worker, and the adult who looks after Yuji during the Mahito arc of Season 1. He's dry, tired, scrupulously professional and one of the most loved characters in the series. If you've seen anyone online call jujutsu work "shit" with total sincerity, that's the "nanami jjk" energy they're quoting.
Personality
Nanami hates overtime, says so, and still works harder than almost anyone. He treats sorcery as a job rather than a calling, keeps strict hours and has no patience for heroics. But he holds one principle firmly: adults should protect children, and children shouldn't have to carry the weight adults put on them. That's why he's protective of Yuji while refusing to treat him as an equal. Yuji is a child. Nanami is the adult.
He's also funnier than he first appears. His deadpan reactions to Gojo are some of Season 1's best small moments.
Appearance
Neat blond hair with a side parting, distinctive tinted glasses, a beige suit with a leopard-print tie, and a weapon wrapped in cloth that looks like a dull cleaver. He looks exactly like an exhausted salaryman, which is the point.
Background
Nanami studied at Tokyo Jujutsu High a year below Gojo and Geto, alongside his friend Yu Haibara. When Haibara died on a mission, Nanami decided jujutsu was not worth it and quit to become an ordinary office worker. He found that work just as empty, and came back to sorcery when he realised that at least as a sorcerer, people sometimes thanked him. Season 1 shows that in a short flashback, prompted by a bakery worker he helps.
Cursed technique: Ratio
Nanami's Ratio Technique lets him create a weak point on any target by dividing it into a 7:3 ratio along its length. Hitting that exact point lands a critical hit, even on a target much stronger than him. It works on curses and objects alike, which is how he can cut through thick walls and curses with what looks like a blunt blade.
He has two important extensions:
- Overtime, a binding vow tied to his working hours. By restricting his full strength during "work time", his power rises sharply once he's working overtime.
- Collapse, which uses Ratio on the environment to bring down walls or floors on enemies.
Nanami also holds the record for consecutive Black Flashes, four in a row, set during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons in JJK 0. Yuji ties it later. Nanami thinks of it as luck.
Nanami's fights by arc
Season 1: he investigates the killings that lead to Mahito, fights Mahito in the sewers, then teams up with Yuji to fight him in Junpei's school. It's Nanami's first time seeing Idle Transfiguration up close, and the transfigured humans in that arc rattle him more than any curse he's fought.

Shibuya: Nanami works with Maki and Naobito Zenin until Jogo burns all three. Badly burned, he keeps walking through Shibuya, killing transfigured humans. In Chapter 120 (Season 2 episode 18), he meets Mahito one last time. His last thought is of a beach in Malaysia he once dreamed of retiring to. His last words, to Yuji, are that he'll leave the rest to him. Then Mahito kills him in front of Yuji.
Nanami's philosophy
Nanami's attitude can be summed up by a line from his first appearance: he thinks jujutsu work, like all work, is shit. He doesn't romanticise sorcery or treat it as a noble calling. He does it because he's good at it and because he found that at least here, people sometimes thank him.
What makes him admirable is that this cynicism never becomes an excuse. He refuses to let Yuji take on responsibility that belongs to adults. He takes his job seriously precisely because he doesn't believe in it in a grand sense. It's a very grown-up kind of heroism, and it's rare in shonen manga.
Nanami and Yuji
Their relationship starts with Nanami refusing to acknowledge Yuji as a sorcerer. He calls him a child and keeps him at a distance. Over the Mahito arc, that softens into respect. Nanami realises Yuji is earnest and strong, and Yuji sees an adult he can trust completely. By Shibuya, Nanami is the person Yuji most wants to impress. Which is why Nanami's final words land so hard. They're the first time he hands responsibility to Yuji, and he does it knowing it's the last thing he can do.
Nanami's best episodes
Nanami has one of the cleanest arcs in the anime, and you can follow it in a handful of episodes.
His introduction in Season 1. He meets Yuji, explains how much he hates overtime and treats the whole thing like a job interview. It's funny, and it establishes the rules he lives by.
Vs. Mahito. Their first clash is where the show explains Ratio Technique and Overtime properly. Nanami loosening his tie when his shift ends is one of the best character beats in Season 1.
Hidden Inventory. Young Nanami appears as Haibara's friend and Geto's junior. Seeing him before he quit puts his adult cynicism in context.
Shibuya. Badly burned by Jogo, he walks through the station thinking about the beach in Malaysia he'll never see, before Mahito reaches him. Chapter 120 has his last words to Yuji. The anime's version is one of the most quietly devastating scenes MAPPA has made.
If you've only seen clips of Nanami, start with his Season 1 debut. His humour gets lost in highlight reels, and it's the reason the ending hurts.
Relationships
Yuji is the student he mentors and the person he entrusts the future to. Gojo was his senior at school, and Nanami openly finds him exhausting but trusts him. Yu Haibara was his close friend. Takuma Ino is a junior who idolises him. Mahito is his enemy and his killer.
