Who is Maki Zenin?
Maki Zenin is a second-year at Tokyo Jujutsu High, a member of the Zenin clan who was treated as worthless by her own family, and one of the most important fighters in the late manga. She first appears in Season 1, and JJK 0 shows her as a first-year meeting Yuta.
When people search "maki jjk", they usually want two things explained: why she wears glasses, and what happens with the Zenin clan. Both are below.
Personality
Maki is sharp, impatient and tough to impress. She doesn't do sympathy, for herself or anyone else. Under the bluntness is a very specific goal: she wants to become clan head of the Zenin and prove everyone who looked down on her wrong. She mentors the first-years in her own gruff way and is especially good with Nobara, who looks up to her.
Appearance
Dark green hair, usually in a ponytail, glasses and a weapon bag slung over her shoulder. She wears trousers with her uniform. Her look changes a lot after the Zenin arc, along with almost everything else about her.
Background
Maki and her twin sister Mai were born into the Zenin clan, one of the three great families. The clan values cursed techniques above everything, and Maki was born with a Heavenly Restriction: almost no cursed energy, in exchange for superhuman physical ability. In the Zenin family, that made her a failure. The clan also blocks her promotions within jujutsu society, which is why she's still officially Grade 4 at the start of the main story despite being one of the strongest second-years.
Abilities
Maki can't see curses without help, so she wears special glasses. What she lacks in cursed energy, she makes up for with physical strength, speed and mastery of cursed tools: polearms, swords, chains, whatever the situation calls for. Her fighting style is pure weapons work.

In Chapter 149, Mai sacrifices herself so that Maki's Heavenly Restriction becomes complete. Twins count as one person in jujutsu, and Mai's cursed energy had been holding Maki back. After Mai's death, Maki has no cursed energy at all and reaches the same level as Toji: she can perceive curses without glasses and her body is far beyond human limits. Mai also creates the Split Soul Katana for her before she dies.
Maki's fights by arc
JJK 0: she fights alongside Yuta and against Geto's attack on the school.
Season 1: at the Goodwill Event she fights Mai, which is really an argument about the Zenin clan.

Shibuya: Maki is badly burned by Jogo along with Naobito and Nanami.
The Zenin massacre (Season 3): After Mai's death, Maki wipes out most of the Zenin clan's sorcerers, including Ogi, her father. Naoya is finished off by Maki's mother.
Culling Game: In the Sakurajima Colony she fights Naoya again, now reborn as a cursed spirit, and beats him.
Shinjuku: She is one of the fighters who takes on Sukuna directly in the final battle.
Maki and Mai
The twins' relationship is the emotional heart of Maki's story. As children, Mai went along with Maki's decision to leave the Zenin clan and resented her for it, because Mai never wanted to be a sorcerer. Their Goodwill Event fight is really that resentment coming out. Mai attacks Maki for leaving her behind. Maki can't fully answer.
Jujutsu treats twins as a single person, which is why Mai's existence weakens Maki's Heavenly Restriction. When Mai finally understands that, she makes a choice that frees Maki completely. It's quiet, sad and one of the best-written moments in the manga, and it makes everything Maki does afterwards feel heavier.
Maki and Toji
Maki and Toji are distant relatives born into the same clan with the same kind of Heavenly Restriction. Both were despised for it. The difference is what they did with that. Toji walked away and stopped caring. Maki stayed in jujutsu, determined to tear the clan's hierarchy down from inside. Once her restriction is complete, characters start comparing her directly to Toji, and she even ends up with his Playful Cloud. The series clearly wants you to see her as the version of Toji who chose to fight for something.
Maki's weapons
Maki has used more cursed tools on screen than almost anyone. She fights with a polearm at the Goodwill Event, uses Playful Cloud in Shibuya, and later carries the Split Soul Katana, which cuts the soul directly.
The chapters that make Maki
Maki's best moments come in a few concentrated bursts.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Her first fights with Yuta show the confidence she projects and the chip on her shoulder underneath. Watch how she treats him once he proves he's serious.
Goodwill Event vs Mai. The twins' fight is written like an argument that's been brewing for years. Mai's bullets versus Maki's polearm is the surface. The real fight is about who left whom.
Shibuya. She's caught in Jogo's flames and survives with serious burns, which sets up her scarred look for the rest of the series.
Chapter 149 and the Zenin clan chapters. After Mai's sacrifice, Maki returns to the Zenin estate and wipes out the clan's fighting force on her own. These chapters are among the most-discussed in the manga and the point where comparisons to Toji stop being a joke.
Anime-only fans will want to brace for that arc. It's brutal, and it's also the most satisfying payoff a side character gets in the whole series.
Relationships
Mai is her twin and the most complicated relationship in her life. Yuta, Inumaki and Panda are her classmates. Nobara is the kouhai she gets along with best. Naoya Zenin is the cousin who embodies everything wrong with the clan.
