Who is Toji Fushiguro?
Toji Fushiguro is a sorcerer killer, Megumi's father and the antagonist of Season 2's Hidden Inventory arc. He has no cursed energy at all, and he still beats a teenage Satoru Gojo. For a character with maybe six episodes of screen time, he's had an outsized effect on the fandom. Search "toji jjk" and you'll find more fan art than some main characters get.
Personality: the man who stopped caring
Toji is lazy, cynical and unbothered. He gambles, takes money from whoever pays, and treats sorcerers' ideals with contempt. He doesn't hate Gojo or Geto. They're a job.
The series makes clear that he wasn't always like this. He was treated as worthless by the Zenin clan, found something like peace when he married Megumi's mother, and lost it when she died. What's left is a man who has decided nothing matters, including himself. Gojo gets the closest look at that in their final exchange.
Appearance
Short black hair, a scar across the corner of his mouth, and a heavily muscled build he usually hides under loose, plain clothes. He often has a worm-like cursed spirit wrapped around his body, which is part of his kit.
Background
Toji was born into the Zenin clan with a Heavenly Restriction: no cursed energy whatsoever, in exchange for a body far beyond any normal human. In a clan that only values techniques, he was despised. He left, married into the Fushiguro family, and had a son, Megumi. After his wife's death, he drifted into work as a hired killer and agreed to sell Megumi to the Zenin clan because the boy had inherited the Ten Shadows.
Abilities: the Heavenly Restriction
Because Toji has zero cursed energy, he's essentially invisible to barriers and to people who sense cursed energy. That's how he slips into Jujutsu High in Hidden Inventory without setting anything off. His senses, strength and speed are inhuman, enough to see curses without any help.
He makes up for the lack of a technique with cursed tools, which he keeps inside the worm-like curse he swallows and carries around:
- Inverted Spear of Heaven, a short blade that cancels any cursed technique it touches. It cuts straight through Gojo's Infinity.
- Chain of a Thousand Miles, a chain with no fixed length.
- Playful Cloud, a three-section staff that hits harder the stronger the user is. It later passes to Maki.
Toji's fights
Hidden Inventory (Season 2, episodes 1–5): hired to kill Riko Amanai, Toji wears Gojo down over days with bounties on Riko's head, then ambushes him. He stabs Gojo through with the Inverted Spear of Heaven and appears to kill him. He then shoots Riko and delivers her body to the cult that wanted her dead.

Gojo survives by awakening Reverse Cursed Technique and comes back changed. He kills Toji with Hollow Purple. Before he dies, Toji tells Gojo that his son will be sold to the Zenin clan in a couple of years and that Gojo can do what he likes with that information.
Shibuya: Granny Ogami's séance technique puts Toji's body over her grandson's, intending to borrow only his physical abilities. Toji's will takes over instead. He kills Granny Ogami, kills Dagon in seconds, and then finds Megumi. When Megumi tells him his family name is Fushiguro, not Zenin, Toji is relieved and takes his own life.
Toji vs Gojo: why the fight matters
Toji's fight with Gojo in Hidden Inventory is one of the most rewatched sequences in the anime, and not just for the animation. It's the only time we see Gojo truly lose. Toji plans for days: he puts a bounty on Riko, lets curse users wear down Gojo's attention, waits until Gojo has gone without sleep, and strikes from a position Gojo can't sense. It's the work of a professional, and it's a reminder that strength isn't everything in jujutsu.
The fight also creates the Gojo we know. Before Toji, Gojo was strong but limited. After nearly dying, he masters Reverse Cursed Technique, unlocks Red and Hollow Purple, and comes back almost euphoric. Toji's death at his hands is the moment Gojo becomes "the strongest". In a way, Toji is one of the most important characters in the series for that reason alone.
Toji and Megumi
Toji barely appears in Megumi's life, and Megumi has few memories of him. But Toji's choices shape Megumi's entire story. Selling him to the Zenin clan is what leads Gojo to step in. Toji's dying words to Gojo are the only thing he does for his son. When the two finally meet in Shibuya, Toji doesn't recognise him at first. When he does, all he asks is his name. Hearing "Fushiguro" is enough for him.
Toji's essential scenes
Toji appears in surprisingly few episodes for someone this famous. Here's where to find him.
Hidden Inventory (Season 2). The first five episodes cover the Star Plasma Vessel mission. His ambush on Gojo, his calm, transactional way of talking and his pursuit of Riko are all here. The Gojo fight itself is one of MAPPA's most celebrated sequences.
Gojo's awakening. The episode where Gojo comes back from near-death and turns the tables. Toji's last words, telling Gojo about his son, take only a few seconds and change the course of the series.
Shibuya. Revived through a ritual gone wrong, Toji's body acts on instinct and goes after the strongest person nearby, which turns out to be Megumi. In Chapter 113 he asks the boy's name, hears "Fushiguro", says "Not Zenin, huh? Good for you", and ends his own life.
That's it. Toji's reputation rests on maybe two hours of screen time, which says a lot about how well-written he is. If you're rewatching for him, pay attention to his silences. He says far less than everyone around him, and what he leaves out tells the story.
Relationships
Megumi is his son, whom he named. Gojo is his greatest opponent. Maki is a distant relative who ends up following a similar path, and inheriting his Playful Cloud. Naobito and the rest of the Zenin clan are the family he walked away from.
