Who is Mahito in JJK?

Mahito is a special grade cursed spirit and, for the first two seasons of the anime, Yuji Itadori's real nemesis. Sukuna is the bigger threat, but Mahito is the one Yuji hates. He was born from the fear and hatred humans feel toward each other, which is a neat bit of worldbuilding: Jogo comes from fear of the earth, Hanami from fear of forests, and Mahito comes from us.

That origin explains his personality. He looks like a young man with stitched, patchwork skin and long grey-blue hair, and he's curious and playful, almost childish, in the way he asks questions. He reads books, picks up words he likes and talks about the soul like a hobbyist. He also treats people as material. To Mahito, killing a human and reshaping one aren't morally different. Both are things he can do with his hands, and he finds it funny that humans think otherwise. Mahito JJK fans tend to call him the scariest villain in the series for exactly this reason. He doesn't hate people. He just doesn't think they count.

Mahito's cursed technique: Idle Transfiguration

Mahito can perceive the shape of a soul. Touching someone lets him reshape it, and the body follows the soul. So a single touch can turn a person into a twisted, barely-alive "transfigured human" or kill them outright. Normal defence doesn't help, since the body isn't the real target. The only people who can reliably hurt him back are those who can strike the soul directly. Early on that means Yuji, because Sukuna's soul inside him gives him a feel for the boundary, and anyone Sukuna decides to deal with personally.

He uses the same technique on himself constantly: sharper limbs, wings, extra arms, shrinking to escape through a drain. In Shibuya he shows off two nastier tricks. Polymorphic Soul Isomer fuses the souls of transfigured humans into a single explosive attack. Body Repel turns stored, shrunken humans into weapons by expanding them back to full size mid-fight. Neither is the kind of thing you forget seeing.

Domain Expansion: Self-Embodiment of Perfection

Inside his domain, Idle Transfiguration hits automatically. Anyone caught in it is touched without being touched. He first uses it in Chapter 30 against Nanami and Yuji. It backfires, because Yuji's body holds Sukuna's soul too, and Sukuna takes the intrusion personally. In Shibuya he develops the domain further and starts using a rough, compact version on the fly. That's about as clear a sign as the manga gives of how quickly he grows.

Mahito's story, arc by arc

Junpei and the first Nanami fight

Mahito's first scene is in Chapter 16. He's at the beach with Geto (the body Kenjaku is wearing), discussing a plan to seal Gojo. In the anime he arrives during the early Season 1 episodes leading into the Junpei storyline. That storyline is Mahito at his worst. He befriends Junpei Yoshino, a bullied high schooler, teaches him jujutsu and lets him believe the curse world will be kinder to him than his own. Meanwhile he runs a series of killings that Nanami is assigned to investigate. Nanami's first fight with him, in the sewers under the city, ends with Nanami burying him in rubble and getting away. Mahito, in his own words, is fascinated rather than angry.

The arc ends at Junpei's school. Junpei's mother Nagi dies, and Mahito sets up the evidence so Junpei blames the bullies. When Yuji talks Junpei down, Mahito transfigures him in front of Yuji, which is the episode-12 moment "To You, Someday" is remembered for. Yuji and Nanami corner Mahito together after that. He opens his domain, Sukuna answers, and Mahito barely escapes. It's the first time he looks genuinely rattled.

Mechamaru and the run-up to Shibuya

Kokichi Muta, the Kyoto student behind Mechamaru, had been feeding information to Mahito's side in exchange for a healthy body. Mahito heals him and then they fight. Kokichi's Ultimate Mechamaru unloads on him and nearly wins. Mahito comes out of it with a better understanding of his own technique, and that pattern repeats all through Shibuya: every fight that should kill him leaves him stronger.

Nanami. Nanami reaches Mahito exhausted and burned by Jogo. Their encounter ends in Chapter 120, adapted in Season 2 episode 18: Mahito kills him while Yuji watches. Nanami's last words to Yuji are a quiet handover, and they are why most fans will never forgive Mahito.

Nobara. In the fight that follows, Mahito swaps places with one of his own doubles to get past Nobara's Resonance and touches her face. The series then leaves her fate open for a very long stretch of chapters.

Yuji and Todo. Todo arrives and does what nobody else can: makes Mahito's flexibility a weakness. Boogie Woogie keeps swapping positions so Mahito never knows where the next hit is coming from. Mahito takes Todo's hand, but Yuji lands Black Flash after Black Flash. Mahito answers with what he calls his true form, Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing. Yuji's final punch, thrown with no tricks at all, ends it. By then Yuji has finally accepted being a cog in the machine of exorcising curses, and that's the emotional climax of the arc.

The end. Mahito crawls away and runs into Kenjaku, who absorbs him with Cursed Spirit Manipulation in Chapter 133. Kenjaku later uses Mahito's Idle Transfiguration to wake up the humans he had marked, which is how the Culling Game begins. So Mahito's technique keeps shaping the story long after he's gone.

Mahito vs Yuji: why the rivalry works

They're mirror images, and the story says so. Yuji believes every person deserves a proper death. Mahito says there's no meaning to it, that the soul is just a shape and he can change it whenever he likes. Each is offended by the other's existence. Yuji's turn in Shibuya is to stop arguing with Mahito about meaning and just do the job. It's darker than a typical shonen "I'll protect everyone" moment, and it lands because of everything Mahito has taken from him by then.
