Who is Sukuna in JJK?

Ryomen Sukuna is the King of Curses, a sorcerer from the Heian era, about a thousand years ago, so powerful and so cruel that even death didn't finish him. His remains became twenty cursed fingers. Yuji Itadori swallows one in Chapter 1, and from then on the series' biggest threat is living inside its protagonist.

For fans searching "sukuna jjk", that's the core of him: the villain you can't get away from. He rarely needs to scheme. He just waits for the moment Yuji gets hurt badly enough.

Personality: the king who does what he likes

Sukuna is arrogant, bored by almost everyone and completely self-interested. He doesn't want to rule the world or remake society. When he talks about what he values, it's pleasure and whatever he finds interesting in the moment. That makes him scarier than villains with a plan. There's nothing to negotiate with.

He does have tastes. He's fascinated by Megumi's potential from early on, respects strong opponents, and occasionally gives advice that's almost kind, usually because it amuses him. Uraume, his servant of a thousand years, is the one person he seems to treat as something more than a tool.

Appearance

When Sukuna takes over Yuji's body, it gets black tattoo-like markings across the face and body and a second pair of eyes under the first. His true form, which the manga shows much later, has four arms and two faces, matching the figure of Ryomen Sukuna in Japanese legend, recorded in the eighth-century Nihon Shoki.

Cursed technique and abilities

Sukuna's technique is usually called Shrine. Its two main attacks are slashes:

  • Dismantle, a standard ranged slash he uses on most things.
  • Cleave, which adjusts to the target's toughness and cursed energy so that one cut is always enough.

He can also use fire, which he calls by the incantation "Open" in the manga, firing a flaming arrow. Beyond the technique, he's a master of Reverse Cursed Technique and has enormous reserves of cursed energy that grow with every finger he takes in.

Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine

Malevolent Shrine is unusual because it doesn't need a closing barrier. Sukuna builds his domain in the open, like painting on a canvas without a frame, which gives it a huge range and lets anyone inside escape in theory. In practice, everything in range gets shredded by Dismantle and Cleave. In Shibuya he uses it against Mahoraga and narrows its range so Megumi survives. The rest of the area is not so lucky.

Sukuna's key moments by arc

Season 1: In the Fearsome Womb arc (episode 5), Sukuna takes control of Yuji, rips out his heart and dares Megumi to fight him. Yuji dies and comes back after striking a deal with Sukuna he can't remember. In the Junpei arc, Sukuna warns Mahito not to touch his soul, and Mahito learns the hard way.

Shibuya: Jogo feeds an unconscious Yuji enough fingers to bring Sukuna out. Sukuna kills Jogo, then destroys Mahoraga and a huge part of Shibuya. Yuji wakes up to see what "he" has done.

Culling Game: In Chapter 212, Sukuna uses the deal from the Fearsome Womb, takes over Yuji for one minute, and forces a finger into Megumi. He transfers into Megumi's body. After that, he devours more fingers and eventually brings back his true form.

Shinjuku: He fights Gojo and kills him in Chapter 236, then fights Kashimo, Higuruma, Yuji, Yuta and many others in turn. He's finally beaten by Yuji, separated from Megumi's body and fades away in Chapter 268.

Why Sukuna works as a villain

Most shonen villains want something the hero can stop. Sukuna mostly wants to be left alone to enjoy himself, and that's terrifying when "enjoying himself" means a few thousand deaths. The series uses that to push Yuji's guilt as far as it can go. Every time Sukuna acts, it's Yuji's body doing it, and the people around Yuji have to decide whether to keep trusting him.

He's also a useful measuring stick. When a new fighter shows up, the unspoken question is always how they'd do against Sukuna. For most of the story the honest answer is "badly", and that keeps the power scale grounded even as the cast keeps levelling up.

Fans argue about whether the late manga gives him enough depth. His backstory stays thin, and some readers wanted more. We think the restraint mostly works. Sukuna is at his best as a force the characters have to survive, and a long sympathetic flashback would have blunted that.

Sukuna and Megumi

From the Fearsome Womb onwards, Sukuna keeps noticing Megumi. He scolds him for holding back, comments on his potential, and seems almost disappointed when Megumi chooses self-sacrifice over winning. For a long time readers weren't sure why. The answer is that Sukuna wants Megumi's Ten Shadows, and the plan he sets up in Season 1 doesn't pay off until the Culling Game.

Best Sukuna moments to rewatch

Season 1, Episode 1. Yuji swallows the finger and Sukuna's first line is basically a threat to the whole planet. The animation sells the shift in a few frames: new markings, new posture, a completely different smile.

Season 1, Episode 5. The Fearsome Womb mission. Sukuna takes Yuji's body, toys with a cursed spirit, then tears out Yuji's heart so Yuji can't take control back. Nothing before this shows how little he cares about his host.

Shibuya, Sukuna vs Jogo. Jogo throws everything he has, including Maximum: Meteor, and Sukuna treats it as a lesson. The ending, where Sukuna tells him he was strong, is weirdly gentle for a character this cruel.

Shibuya, Malevolent Shrine. His domain flattens a whole district of Shibuya while he fights Mahoraga. If you want the clearest picture of what a Special Grade at full power looks like, this is it.

Manga readers should also make time for the Shinjuku showdown. His long battle with Gojo is the payoff for years of build-up, and Chapter 268 is where Yuji finally beats him. Read those chapters in one sitting if you can, because the pacing loses a lot when you take them a week at a time.

Relationships

Yuji is his vessel, and they hate each other. Sukuna treats him as a cage he'll eventually leave. Megumi is the one sorcerer he's interested in, and that interest is bad news. Uraume serves him loyally. Kenjaku is an ally of convenience: they need each other for their plans, and neither trusts the other. Gojo is the opponent he's been waiting for.

Trivia

Sukuna has a mouth on his body when he lives in Yuji. He occasionally talks through a mouth that opens on Yuji's cheek or hand, which is played for both horror and comedy in Season 1. His name means "two faces" in its first part (両面), which is why his true form looks the way it does.
