Who is Megumi Fushiguro?

Megumi Fushiguro is Yuji's first-year classmate at Tokyo Jujutsu High and the user of the Ten Shadows technique, one of the most prized techniques of the Zenin clan. He's the first sorcerer Yuji meets, in Chapter 1, when Megumi comes to Sendai to recover the Sukuna finger Yuji ends up swallowing.

If you ask fans for "megumi jjk" opinions, you'll get two camps. One sees him as the coolest character in the series. The other sees him as the most tragic. They're both right.

Personality

Megumi is quiet, blunt and practical. He doesn't believe in saving everyone. He says plainly that he saves people selectively, choosing to help good people rather than treating every life as equal. That's the exact opposite of Yuji, and their friendship works because neither of them fully wins that argument.

He also has a habit of undervaluing himself. Megumi's go-to move in a desperate fight is to sacrifice himself, and Gojo calls him out on it, telling him to fight with more greed. Season 1's Yasohachi Bridge fight is the first time he really listens.

Appearance

Spiky black hair that sticks out in every direction, sharp dark eyes and the standard Tokyo uniform. Most references put him at 175 cm. He looks a lot like his father Toji, which becomes important.

Background

Megumi is the son of Toji Fushiguro, a man born into the Zenin clan who left it. Toji married into the Fushiguro family and later agreed to sell Megumi to the Zenin clan because of his technique. After Toji's death, Gojo stepped in and arranged things so that Megumi became a sorcerer on his own terms instead. Megumi grew up looking after his step-sister Tsumiki, whom he cares about more than anyone. Her fate drives his whole Culling Game arc.

Cursed technique: Ten Shadows

The Ten Shadows Technique lets Megumi summon shikigami from shadows using hand signs. To use a new shikigami, he has to beat it in a ritual first. If a shikigami is destroyed, it's gone for good, but its powers can pass to another shikigami. The ones you'll see most:

  • Divine Dogs, his first pair. When the white dog is destroyed, the black dog inherits its power and becomes Divine Dog: Totality.
  • Nue, a winged shikigami that strikes with electricity.
  • Toad, Max Elephant, Rabbit Escape and Orochi, used for grabbing, water, distractions and ambushes.
  • Mahoraga, the strongest of the ten. Nobody in history has tamed it. Summoning it is basically a suicide move, which is why Megumi treats it as a last resort.

Domain Expansion: Chimera Shadow Garden

Megumi first uses Chimera Shadow Garden in Chapter 58 (Season 1 episode 23) against a finger bearer at Yasohachi Bridge. It's incomplete, without a proper barrier or sure-hit effect, but it floods the area with shadow, lets him make duplicate shikigami and move through shadows. He wins that fight by stepping out of the curse's own shadow with Divine Dog: Totality.

Megumi's fights by arc

Season 1: the Fearsome Womb, the Goodwill Event and Yasohachi Bridge.

Shibuya: Badly hurt by curse user Haruta Shigemo, Megumi summons Mahoraga. Sukuna, in Yuji's body, kills it to save him. Later, the revived Toji attacks Megumi, recognises him and takes his own life.

Culling Game: In Tokyo Colony No. 1, Megumi faces Reggie Star and completes a domain by trapping Reggie inside a gymnasium. Then Sukuna takes over his body in Chapter 212, the moment the whole series turns.

Megumi's view of justice

Megumi's line about saving people "unequally" is one of the most important character statements in Season 1. He explains it to Yuji at the detention centre: he doesn't want to save everyone, only people he believes are good, and he's fine with that inconsistency because he knows it's his choice. It's not cruelty. It's how a kid who grew up looking after his sister, with no adults to rely on, learned to make sense of a world where you can't save everybody.

That belief gets tested hard. Tsumiki, the person he'd save above anyone, is good in exactly the way he admires, and the Culling Game threatens her directly. Everything he does in that arc comes back to her. The series also uses his self-sacrificing streak against him. When someone values their own life that little, a villain who wants their body has an easier time.

Megumi vs Yuji

Yuji and Megumi are written as opposites who still like each other. Yuji fights with his body, Megumi with an inherited technique. Yuji wants to save everyone, Megumi wants to save the right people. Yuji was raised by a loving grandfather, Megumi by nobody in particular. It's no accident that Sukuna ends up moving from one to the other.

Megumi's key chapters and episodes

Megumi takes a while to show his full range, so it helps to know where his best material is.

The Fearsome Womb (Season 1). He tries to talk Yuji into abandoning the prisoners, loses that argument, then fights a Special Grade alone. It's the first real look at his values and his limits.

Chapter 58. His fight at the Yasohachi Bridge, where his domain Chimera Shadow Garden appears for the first time. It's incomplete and messy, which is exactly why it works. You can see him improvising.

Shibuya. Facing a curse user while badly hurt, he summons Mahoraga as a last resort, planning to take his enemy down with him. Sukuna steps in to save him, and that choice explains a huge amount of what happens later.

The Culling Game. The arc where Sukuna takes his body. The chapters after Tsumiki's reveal are some of the most painful in the series.

If you only have time for one, pick the Yasohachi Bridge fight. It's Megumi deciding, mid-fight, that he's allowed to want to win.

Relationships

Yuji is his best friend, even if he wouldn't say it that way. Gojo is the guardian figure who took responsibility for him. Tsumiki is his reason for doing almost everything. Toji is a father he barely remembers. Sukuna takes an unsettling interest in him from the Fearsome Womb onwards.

Megumi quick facts

  • Japanese name: 伏黒恵 (Fushiguro Megumi)
  • Age: 15 at the start of the story
  • Grade: Grade 2
  • Technique: Ten Shadows
  • Domain: Chimera Shadow Garden
  • Voice actors: Yuma Uchida (Japanese), Robbie Daymond (English)

Trivia

His given name, 恵, means "blessing". It was chosen by Toji, which gives his last scene with Megumi in Shibuya an extra sting. Megumi's family name of Fushiguro comes from his father's marriage, not the Zenin line, and Toji's reaction to hearing that name is one of the series' quietest gut punches.

Is Megumi dead?

⚠ Ending spoiler. Enable "Spoilers" up top.

No. Despite being possessed by Sukuna from Chapter 212 until the end of the final battle, Megumi survives. He's alive at the end of the manga and visits Tsumiki's grave in the epilogue.
