Who is Nobara Kugisaki?
Nobara Kugisaki is the third member of Tokyo Jujutsu High's first-year class, a transfer from the countryside who fights with a hammer, nails and a straw doll. She properly arrives in Season 1 episode 3 and takes about thirty seconds to establish that she will not be anyone's sidekick.
"Nobara jjk" searches spike every time the anime reaches a big moment for her, and for good reason. She's one of the most quotable characters in the series and one of the most argued about, mainly because of what happens to her in Shibuya.
Personality: unapologetically herself
Nobara is loud, confident, vain about her looks and fiercely proud of it. She left her rural hometown because she found it suffocating, and moving to Tokyo is part of who she is. She's also loyal in a direct, unsentimental way. She'll mock Yuji in one scene and charge a curse for him in the next.
The fight with Momo Nishimiya at the Goodwill Event is the best summary of her. Momo argues that women in jujutsu have to be perfect to be accepted. Nobara's answer, roughly, is that she loves herself as she is, strong and beautiful, and doesn't need anyone's permission. It's one of the clearest statements of a character's values in Season 1.
Appearance
An orange-brown bob, brown eyes and a version of the Tokyo uniform with a skirt. She carries a hammer and a pouch of nails at her waist.
Background
Nobara grew up in a small village she couldn't wait to leave. Two people there mattered to her: Saori, an older girl from the city whom the village drove away, and Fumi, a childhood friend. Season 1 gives us glimpses of both, and they explain why Nobara is so determined to live on her own terms in Tokyo.
Cursed technique: Straw Doll
Nobara's Straw Doll Technique uses cursed energy channelled through nails and a hammer. It sounds simple and it's very flexible:
- Hairpin fires nails she's already driven into a target or the environment, detonating them with cursed energy.
- Resonance is the scary one. If she has part of a target, like blood or a severed limb, she drives a nail into a straw doll with it and the damage reaches the target wherever they are.
Resonance can even hit the soul in some cases, which makes her one of the very few early characters who can genuinely threaten Mahito. She doesn't have a domain expansion.
Nobara's fights by arc
Season 1: she beats a curse in Roppongi on her first mission, fights Momo and Mai at the Goodwill Event, and, with Yuji, takes down the Death Paintings Eso and Kechizu. Resonance on Eso's blood helps win that fight.

Shibuya: Nobara fights a body double of Mahito, wins, then runs into the real Mahito. In Chapter 125 he touches her face with Idle Transfiguration. Her final words to Yuji are that it wasn't so bad. Then she disappears from the story for years.
Return: In Chapter 267, Nobara is revealed to have survived. She uses Resonance during the final fight with Sukuna, helping turn it.
Why Nobara matters
Nobara is the first-year who has the clearest idea of who she is. Yuji is figuring out what he believes, Megumi is weighed down by his family. Nobara knows what she wants: to live in Tokyo as herself, loudly, without apologising. That clarity makes her the emotional anchor of the trio in Season 1, and it's why her absence in the later manga felt so huge to readers.
She's also one of the series' most direct answers to the way jujutsu treats women. Her exchange with Momo at the Goodwill Event, Maki's whole storyline, and Nobara's own refusal to shrink herself all push in the same direction. Nobara doesn't make speeches about it. She just lives that way.
Nobara and Yuji
Their friendship is one of the best parts of Season 1. They fight like siblings, team up instantly when it counts, and share some of the anime's funniest moments, especially when Yuji "comes back from the dead" and Nobara has to process it. The Death Painting fight is the best example of them as a pair. Yuji takes the hits, Nobara turns the enemy's own blood against them with Resonance, and they both walk out changed by what they had to do.
Nobara's best fights
Vs. Momo and Mai (Goodwill Event). Not her strongest showing, but the clearest look at her values.
Vs. Eso and Kechizu (Season 1 finale). The fight where Resonance shows how nasty it really is.
Vs. Mahito's double (Shibuya). A smart, tense fight that shows how dangerous she is to soul-based enemies.
Five Nobara scenes worth rewatching
Her introduction (Season 1, Episode 3). She arrives in Tokyo, is disappointed by Roppongi and immediately picks a fight with a street scout. You learn more about her in those two minutes than some characters get in a season.
The building mission. Her first exorcism alongside Yuji shows off Straw Doll Technique and her nerve. She doesn't panic when things go wrong, and she keeps her head when a child gets caught up in the job.
Vs. Momo and Mai. The Goodwill Event fight is half combat, half argument about what women in jujutsu are supposed to put up with. Her answer to Mai is the most Nobara line in the series.
Vs. Eso and Kechizu. Paired with Yuji in the Season 1 finale, she turns her own wounds into weapons with Resonance. It's tactical and gross in the best way.
Shibuya. Her fight with Mahito's double is clever, and what happens to her right after is the moment a lot of fans remember as the series getting truly cruel. Chapter 267 is the one to read if you want to see her return.
Relationships
Yuji and Megumi are her classmates and closest friends. She and Yuji play off each other like siblings. Maki is the senpai she respects most. Saori and Fumi are her ties to home.
